Hold Back the Tide is one of those books that give you a light impression when they start but end up as being a completely different story. This book is a gift to the YA audience but can be enjoyed by people of any age group. While on the superficial level, it will take you on a journey of fighting the monsters, at its heart, it is really 5/5(12).

Hold Back the Tide is a gothic Scottish tale about the creatures who escaped from the loch and a girl desperate to escape her fate but when bodies start piling up she is determined to right the wrongs of her father only to learn that sometimes the cruelest punishment is the truth/5.

Hold Back the Tide is an incredibly intense novel — Salisbury knows how to craft an atmosphere and really excels herself in this book. I’ve not been so thrilled and frightened by a book since The Call by Paedar O’Guillan.

I raced through this over the weekend and bawled my eyes out in the bath/5(30). In Hold Back the Tide the setting is crucial and plays a key part in a story which deliciously holds back the horror element for the second half of the story. Alva’s father is the ‘ Naomhfhuil ’ and is responsible for monitoring the surrounding mountain lake (loch in Scottish) which feeds essential water into the local mill in the nearby.
